West Nile Virus
The West Nile Virus is a viral disease transmitted by a bite of an infected mosquito. People who become infected with the West Nile Virus may develop flu-like symptoms during the summer and early fall. Mosquitoes tend to breed in stagnant water.
The Ashtabula County Health Department recommends residents to take preventive steps to reduce the possibility that the West Nile Virus will be transmitted from mosquitoes to humans.
These steps include:
- Use mosquito repellents according to directions when outdoors
- Avoid going out just before and after dusk. If you must go out, use mosquito repellent.
- Dispose of unwanted containers which can hold stagnant water. (i.e. plastic container, coffee cans, etc.)
- Properly dispose of waste tires
- Eliminate clogged roof gutters
- Turn over plastic wadding pools when not in use
- Fill in low spots on property, which can collect stagnant water
- Empty and clean bird baths on a weekly basis
- Make sure screens on all doors and windows are in good repair
- Keep your grass short
- Drill drain holes in tire swings and recycling containers.
Residents who initiate these steps will help prevent major mosquito population problems and needless exposure to mosquitoes.
